Europeans first settled here in 1762, drawn here initially due to the island's proximity to sailing routes. Here they first settled on its western side. But they were not the first to enjoy the attributes of this island. Ancient native peoples made their home on Mount Desert Island long before European explorers ventured here. It is estimated that the Wabanaki people were present here between 3,000 and 5,000 years ago. As early as the 1500s the first Europeans made contact with the Wabanakis.
From the mid 1850s to 1947 this became the summer destination for artists, journalists and sportsmen drawn by the promise of vast, unspoiled wilderness. America's most socially prominent families came as well-the Rockefellers, Morgans, Fords, Astors, Vanderbilts and Pulitzers. Summering in Bar Harbor, they built magnificent summer "cottages" of palatial dimensions. Donating land, these same families created what would ultimately preserve the beauty we see today as they created Acadia National Park.

After a delicious lunch we came home for a short nap before enjoying the rest of our Sunday off from work.
