The Edge of the Earth

"Come down the shortcut, sucker..."

Kingfield, Maine and Sucker Brook Road may not be the edge of the earth, but you can see it from there.  As we followed a circular route to visit five campgrounds, we listened to our Garmin GPS also known as "Stella" who advised us to go down "Sucker Brook Road" to reach our last campground.  Starting into it, we briefly hesitated on the gravel road extending out in front of us then forged ahead to finish our day.

Now mind you, a GMC Terrain does not have four wheel drive.  The road narrowed to barely the width of the car as we traveled down it.  Without a way to easily turn around and "Stella" telling us we had only two miles to go, we put aside our concerns and continued over ruts, rocks and tiny wood plank bridges toward our goal.  Perhaps the snow mobile and ATV (all terrain vehicle) signs should have given us a clue of what was ahead of us.  "Just one mile to go" on the GPS drew us on.

We saw a deer and were certain that moose had to be near.  Alas, even the moose are smarter than "Stella" apparently.  Finally, the road widened and ended just a half a mile from our goal and now five miles into "Deliverance" (remember the movie about going down a remote river staring Burt Reynolds?!)  There was nothing to do but make a three point turn and go back five miles through this hellish road all over again as the day was drawing toward evening.  We began wondering how much water and how many snack bars we had on hand in case we ended up in the ditch or down in some creek off one of the wood plank bridges.  Amazingly, they had "Lots for Sale" in this remote area!  Are they kidding?!  Who would live here miles from the nearest grocery store or gas station?

Finally, we were safely back to our paved road beginning and we had a good laugh.  We had seen the edge of the world and returned from it safely.  A few minutes later the owner of the campground shared with us that we were not the only ones who listened to their GPS and traveled down and back on "Sucker Brook Road" before reaching her campground.

If you ask me, I'd say they should have stayed home with me!  Maybe if I hang on to Mom's purse and briefcase, they'll stay put here in the RV and forget these adventures...
