The Bass Harbor Head Light Station is one of many along the Maine coastline. This particular lighthouse is located within the Acadia National Park on the southeast corner of Mount Desert Island. It marks the entrance to Bass Harbor and Blue Hill Bay. It was built of brick and stone and first lit in 1858. It became automated in 1974. Today the lighthouse is a private residence for a local Coast Guard member and his family. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
Today was another foggy and rainy day while we were there, but the views were still nice of the lighthouse with its granite boulder beach below. The weather did not deter a good sized group of tourists from wandering about the grounds. I would have liked climbing down some wooden stairs to the beach, but with the weather and my balance, we opted for the safer side of the lighthouse with its easy concrete walk leading down to the 32' high lighthouse.
